The call of the Goddess at midlife.
- Elena Mary
- Peri menopause
I'm sure many of us are aware of the shift that is needed on the earth right now to bring about much needed balance between the healthy masculine and feminine energies after years of suppression of the feminine . We may seen it in the world around us, and all genders may be feeling the calls of the feminine wanting to rise within us.
There are certain times where these calls might seem to get a bit louder. We might be able to hear them when we begin to embark on more of a spiritual path, or take more time to go inwards and reflect, or just make a decision to listen... but I think there are also times, like rites of passage and times of transition when it almost feels as though we enter into more of a sacred space, or the veil feels a bit thinner and so sometimes this call of the goddess becomes clearer or perhaps harder to ignore.
And I get that if you are going through peri menopause, are struggling with various symptoms, not getting much sleep and trying to balance a million different responsibilities, hearing 'the call of the Goddess' might be the last thing that you want to read or even have time to think about.
And you might, like I did, have a preconception of who might receive this call. I definitely thought she only called on women who had time to meditate for hours, travel the world and post beautiful pictures of themselves dancing naked under the moonlight ...I definitely didn't think she'd have much use for a frazzled hormonal single mum who barely had time for a shower in the mornings.
But I realise now that wherever we are, whatever we have going on, we are all just as important in allowing the return of the feminine; bringing back our connection to the earth, to our bodies and each other, and re establishing the much needed balance between the healthy feminine and healthy masculine within the world. Even frazzled peri menopausal women? Especially frazzled peri menopausal women!
✨️As perimenopause is a time of transition, it can be very much like a time in between. It can be a time when intuition may be heightened, a time for reflection, and a time where our body is asking us to slow down, reflect on our lives, think about what we want to take with us to the next stage of our lives, as well as what we want to leave behind. We may not feel that we have time for any of this and it might not yet be something that is socially acceptable in the west but we may still feel these needs deep within us.
✨️ Today we are living much longer. After menopause we might have a big chunk of our lives left, perhaps without many of the responsibilities that we have had during our earlier years, we are moving towards a time when we we maybe even have some FREEDOM to bring whatever we choose into the world, to fulfil our souls calling or just to do what we love.
✨️ In the west there was a deep rooted cultural belief which we are moving away from but that still infiltrates, that women's power lies in the ability to procreate, that this beautiful creative sexual life force energy that all women have access to has no use after menopause! But we all know that this is far from true. In some cultures it is said that when women stop having periods they hold all this energy within their womb and that's why post menopausal women are so powerful.
So perhaps at perimenopause we can feel this power building up inside us and we can hear the Goddess calling to us to surrender to it, to release anything that might be holding us back from fully embracing our power. Because powerful wise women with many years ahead of them and also much life experience behind them are in a perfect position to help bring this loving energy into the world.
And I know that when you are struggling, the last thing you want to hear is that hot flushes are power surges and that insomnia is for creative expression and you are probably thinking that this must be coming from someone who has no idea what its like..but I would just like to share what I have observed and experienced incase it helps.
At age 44 when i had just started to notice some physical changes associated with peri menopause and also started supporting women at perimenopause (I don't believe things happen by coincidence) I experienced the call of the Goddess or an awakening of Shakti/Kundalini/feminine life force energy in a very sudden way. As this force rose through my body I experienced many physical symptoms and I had no choice but to drastically change my life, heal many old wounds and let parts of me go. You can read about my experience here
I found it hard to talk to people around me about it as I didn't think people would understand and I felt very isolated. But then I discovered that while we were talking about our perimenopausal symptoms if I added in the other things that were going on for me it seemed as though I had a lot more in common with women my age, we had a lot to talk about and our experiences were quite similar.
Through my experience, I had to learn to trust and surrender, to allow it to rip me apart and shed all parts that weren't aligned, this force was so powerful I didn't have a choice. Although wonderful overall, it was scary and overwhelming and I know I would have pushed it down if I could, I did try!
I noticed other women experiencing the desire to do the same as I was being called to do, but because of societies views they were blaming these desires on their hormones, mid life crisis, and crazy ideas, they were wondering who were they to follow these crazy dreams all of a sudden... and because they could, they would try to push this force down again.
But resisting your natural creative life force is hard! And it can affect the physical body too.
I'm a nurse as well, and I do live in the real world, I absolutely know that there are physical things going on within the body at perimenopause that are contributing to our symptoms, and I'm also aware that our way of living is adding to these. The amount of processed foods, sugar toxins and so on are adding to the symptoms. I'm definitely not saying its all to do with our Shakti energy wanting to rise!
But I also know from my experience that it is rarely JUST about the physical or spiritual or emotional, and if we look at one aspect but neglect another we are missing a big part of everything and many opportunities for healing! So I would just like this to be another perspective and something else to be aware of that might all be part of what you are going through.
If you are feeling this call I would love for you to know that no its not JUST your hormones, you are not crazy for wanting to follow your dreams or for feeling like you need to set better boundaries or to not take any s**t from people.
And the world does need you to be fully you, to stand in your power and to be true to yourself, to let any creative energy you feel bubbling away to rise up, to take time, to let go, to rest, to surrender to this force that may feel scary at times, to really nurture your body and soul while you are going through this massive transformation. .. because you are needed in the world as a powerful wise woman and maybe the goddess IS calling you! Even when you feel you are being pulled in all directions and don't even remember who you are anymore. She is there to help you remember.
The more we recognise this and honour this transition, giving ourselves and each other the respect and time we deserve, the more we will help to change things for generations to come.
